Hello everyone


I don’t imagine that anyone could be more surprised than I am to be writing this first letter of the new Brookdale Year.

Congratulations to all our new Vice Presidents.  I am confident that you will all have a fantastic year.  Having looked at the varied programme there is something for every member to enjoy.

Our next major event will be the Christmas Fair.  Hopefully as progress marches on a pace, we will be able to use the whole building.  If not the usual Brookdale Spirit will ensure and raise some much needed revenue for the Club.

The BYT production of Oliver will follow, thankfully this is to be here at the Club.  Fears of an off-site production have been averted.

Despite the extraordinary happenings and lack of a Charity day the generosity of members has raised in excess of £5,000.  We still have the Charity lunch to come.  A huge thank you to everyone for contributing.  Hopefully many lives will be enriched by the generosity.

So despite month of gloom and conjecture, we have everything to look forward to, the Brookdale is precious to all of us and we all anticipate a fantastic future.

The weather is not particularly good at present but at least the rain is not as bad as it was in June.  I believe the contractors are back “at it” clearing the rooms.  Mr Mullen will tell us how far exactly when we see him.

We cannot use the Bar as yet, maybe our doctors would be pleased!  However, our Chairman will be trying to arrange a visit to one of our great breweries for all our Bar stewards and committee members, where we will be entertained with food and drink.  He will let us know the date when he has arranged it.

Our next Bar Quiz will be Sunday 2nd October in the Upper Hall with Jean Tudge in charge of the questions.  Thanks to Harvey Dickinson for the September one and Sunday 6th November sees Ray Halls in charge.  We look forward to these and they will be in the Upper Hall if nothing changes in the mean time.  We all had a lovely time at the VP’s Evening and the Club VP is Rodney Bracewell!  Enjoy your year Rodney!

Our poor President has agreed to continue in post for another year, as she didn’t get a Charity Day due to the floods. She has gone on regardless, working very hard and raising more than £5,000 for her Charity thus far.  I hope she enjoys her extra year.  My marmalade and quince jelly are waiting patiently in the wings!  Good luck for the Brookdale New Year.


Table Top Sales

 Due to the Floods on 6/11 and the unavailability of the downstairs rooms at The Club, the Table Top sales planned for September and October have been cancelled. The next one is programmed for Sunday 26th February 2017.

 Vice Presidents’ Evening

 The VPs’ Evening this year had to be re-arranged to be ‘upstairs only’. VPs were introduced to members in the Upper Hall and Jubilee Room by our Chairman, Richard Church and all then enjoyed a light supper and at-table entertainment by Dave Moore who produced some startling magical tricks for our enjoyment. Our thanks to all those members who rallied round to assist with the set up, take-down and the many other things that need to be done – we could not have done it without you.

Note for your diaries: we have re-arranged Michelle Montuori (who was originally booked for VPs’ Evening) to entertain us on Saturday 25th March 2017. More details to follow.

Christmas Draw

As there will not be another issue of Brookdale News before the Christmas Draw, you will have received a book of Draw Tickets with this issue (unless you have previously stated you do not wish to participate in the Draw). The prizes this year include 3 cash prizes (£150, £100, £50), ATG Theatre Gift Vouchers worth £40, a Case of 6 Wines, and Afternoon Tea for Two at Stockport Plaza amongst others.

Please consider buying or selling some tickets. Our books contain 10 x £1 tickets.

Ticket counterfoils with name address/telephone number and cheques (payable to Brookdale Club Limited) may be placed in the white box (labelled 250 Club) in The Club foyer.

Christmas Fair

 There will be a Christmas Fair Collection Coffee Morning Upstairs in The Club on Saturday 5th November to enable you to make donations of prizes, gifts and other items for this year’s Fair which will be held on Saturday 3rd December – (we would be grateful if you do not donate items you would not wish to receive yourself!). Due to the flood, our stock of books is seriously depleted, so donations of paperbacks will be very welcome. There will be a couple of outside stallholders this year and there will also be all the usual Brookdale stalls and shopping opportunities with the Grand Christmas Draw at 12 noon. Of course coffee and other refreshments will be available.

We are expecting to provide lunch at the Fair for those who wish it. Please watch the notice board for more information as we will need to take bookings/sell tickets in advance.

New Year’s Eve Hogmanay Ball

We have arranged for The Travelling Pig to provide us with a sumptuous meal this year. There will a selection of canapés served from 7.00 pm followed by a hot carvery with a choice of four meats plus wild venison, potatoes, seasonal vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. If anyone would prefer (hot) salmon instead of the carvery, please specify this on the ticket booking form. Five desserts will be on offer and to finish tea or coffee and mints. The Bar will be open from 6.30. We have again retained our DJ of the last two years, Dave Jones who will play music for listening and dancing until after midnight.

There will be more information on the Social Committee notice board.

If you enjoyed VPs’ Evening we hope you will be encouraged to come and support us again. Tickets are priced at £35. There is a ticket booking form in this issue of the Brookdale News – following previous precedent non-members will not be allocated tickets before 1st December, so please book early.

I apologise to those Whist players who rely on the “Forthcoming Events” page of the Brookdale news for the omission of the September date – which resulted in only 14 players attending!


Whist continues on the third Thursday each month. The next dates being 20th October, 17th  November and the Christmas Whist drive on 15th December.


Play commences at 7.30 pm in the Upper Hall, admission is £2.00 per person and a raffle is also held.  Tickets for the raffle are sold during the interval when tea and biscuits are served.


All Whist players are welcome.  This is run by the Social committee, so there is no section to join before you can play.


250 Club


At the time of writing, we are awaiting the return/replacement of the 250 Club box.  Possibly because of this we have not yet sold as many “Shares” as we did for the last series of draws.  It is not too late to enter, or to buy more shares,  if you wish. Remember this is a fund raiser for Brookdale, with half the money going to the club and the other half being divided into the three prizes paid out each month.  To join before the November draw would cost you ten pounds, and that would give you one number which would be entered into each of the next ten monthly draws. which take place on the first Saturday each month at 11.45 am, normally in the bar.

Sections News (in alphabetical order)




Sadly we were unable to perform the charity concert in July due to the refurbishments still going on in the club.  We are looking forward to the completion by Christmas.


Rehearsals for our Christmas concert on Saturday 10th December are well under way and you will find the booking form in the centre of this issue of Brookdale News. You can purchase tickets using the form and of course you can ask members of the choir to get them for you.


Tickets cost £12 and light refreshments will be served at the interval by Carol Streak and her team.  We look forward to your continued support and hope very much that you enjoy the show.


Extra practices for the concert will take place at 8pm on Thursdays or Tuesdays according to the issued timetable, Tuesday 18th October, Tuesday 25th October, Tuesday 1st November, Tuesday 8th November, Thursday  17th November, Tuesday 22nd November, Thursday 1st December and Friday 9th December for the dress rehearsal and the concert Saturday 10th  December.  All rehearsals will take place in Brookdale except the Thursday 17th  November  which will be at the Methodist Church Hazel Grove, thanks to Maureen Gannicliffe for organising that one.  All members of the choir should have copies of the schedule.  Thanks to Mel Owen who will take rehearsals when Alan Streak will be on holiday and hopefully he and Carol will have a well deserved break.


Joyce Doodson has now taken over as VP for this year and we wish her well and we thank Peter Browne for all his efforts in the post this past year.  Mel Owen continues as chairman of the committee and Elaine Stafford remains as secretary.


We look forward to seeing you at the concert and to seeing Brookdale up and running again after the dreaded flood.

Congratulations to Sylvia Jones our first ever Art group VP.


She will be holding her VP coffee morning on Saturday 29th October at 10.00 am,  attractions include delicious refreshments, Joe Sambrook speaking about his experiences as a hospital radio presenter and a contestant on Egg heads.  There will be a display of pictures from our talented members and sale of our original cards.


An early start saw a small group travel to Newark to the headquarters of SAA (Society of All Art) for a day of demonstrations and workshops.  All agreed that is was well worth the journey.


We are organising a day out on Monday 17th November to the Lowry exhibition, “Contemporary Digital Art” and the war museum for “Fashion on the ration”.  We will make our own way to Media city via a tram (using your bus pass if you are old enough!) arriving at 10.45 – 11.00 am.


We hope to arrange a workshop with Margarita in November.  Please see noticeboard for details.


Our chairperson Kerry Blake has been selected as Chairman of the General committee responsible for the running of the club.  As the saying goes “If you need a job doing ask a busy person.”


The Art group are pleased to hear that Maureen is to continue her term of office until 2017,  better luck next time with the weather.

Brookdale News. Bridge Section.


The sterling work to return Brookdale to normal continues and our thanks must go to all those involved in these valiant efforts. Until normality returns, which is anticipated being fully achieved in the New Year, the Wednesday night rubber bridge section have uprooted themselves and are playing at The Ladybrook Pub on Fir road. The Bridge may not be so good after the refreshments, but no-one seems to mind too much!

Thanks are also due to Colin Daynes and Daraius Sorabji who have been arriving early to put the tables out for our Friday afternoon duplicate sessions. Well done guys!


Our thanks must also go to Robyn Caro whose successful year as VP has just come to a end. Well done Robyn for all your hard work, which I know you enjoyed so much! This means of course that we must now welcome our new VP, Vivien Whittaker who was amongst those ceremoniously introduced to members at the recent VP evening. Over 200 members attended, and we wish her a very enjoyable year as our VP.  Our table was very attractively presented by Vivien with flowers and bridge designed table mats.  The magician excelled himself at our table mystifying even experienced Bridge players.  The event was very sociable and enjoyable helped along with food, wine and magic. Vivien and Ian express their sincere thanks to the organisers of the event, and for the support from members.


Hearty congratulations go to Elizabeth Lockhart. Elizabeth was recently presented with an award to mark her 60 years support for the National Lifeboat Institution. She received a gold bar  from the chairman of the RNLI to add to the gold badge which she already had. The photo shows Elizabeth proudly wearing her awards.












Entries for the Annual Teams of Four will have closed before publication of this edition of the Newsletter. Matches are scheduled to begin on Monday 14th November. The event is again being run by Gordon Nightingale, so our thanks to him. Any queries? Also to Gordon please.


Good news is that Robbie Phillips is now more settled in his place of residence, Pat Cartwright and Jean Screeton are home after treatment in hospital and Christine Lant is now well enough to join us at the Bridge table again. Our best wishes go to all other members whose health may not be at its best.


Following the response to emails that were sent out to members recently, the date for the VP’s Bridge Luncheon has now been set as Saturday 11th February 2017. The guest speaker has been booked and further details will be sent out at the beginning November, whilst tickets will be available from the beginning of December.


And finally:  Student in class has xxx facing AQJ in dummy. She leads low and puts in the jack which holds. She plays the ace next. Teacher asks why she didn’t take the finesse again? She says: “You told us that only one of two finesses work!”  That’s Bridge for you!

The joint coffee morning with the Gardeners’ section on Saturday 17th September was a very successful and enjoyable occasion – certainly one of the “positives” to come out of the recent trials at Brookdale.


By the time this “News” is out the Caracamp section will have had a Carachat in the form of a wine and cheese evening.  It is always good to have a get-together after the summer and to welcome other club members.  We also hope that plenty of people will support our Games Afternoon, on Wednesday 2nd  November at 2.00pm in the Upper Hall, when once again the Beetles will appear! – but only on paper, not to spoil the cream scones!


Our next coffee morning is on Saturday 19th November.


September has been the month for thanking Peter Stafford for representing us as our section VP and welcoming Barbara Dickinson for the next year.  An excellent buffet was provided by the Social committee to welcome all the new VPs and we wish them a happy term of office.


Congratulations go to Maureen Walsh both for the support she had given us this year and for being appointed for a second year as Club President..


In our own section we offer congratulations and Best Wishes to Hilary and Tony Wharton who have recently celebrated their Golden Wedding.


Caracamp members were very sorry to learn that Brenda Heikel is not at all well. She is being looked after near her family and we send her our love for her forthcoming 90th birthday.


Another 90th birthday is being celebrated at this time by an old friend of Caracamp, Mansell Barber.  He and Marian enjoyed many caravan rallies in their more active days and we send them both best wishes.

Firstly we’d like to congratulate Maureen Walsh who is remaining as President for another year; we look forward to seeing her with Brenda at our Saturday dances.  A big “thank you” goes to Dennis Hill, our VP in 2015-16, and his wife Joan for all their hard work over the last year – and to Kim Apthorpe who deputised when necessary.  We wish Joan Clare, who took over as our new VP in September, a successful and enjoyable year.


Our annual coffee morning in August was supported by many of you and a useful profit was raised.  The committee members again made it special by donning smart black and white outfits, with the men sporting bow ties.


We have now returned, after the summer break, to our regular Wednesday evening dances (at 8.00pm in the Upper Hall) and we’re looking forward to our Autumn Dance on Saturday 12th November, also in the Upper Hall.


The six-week basic course for any Brookdale Club members who are absolute beginners has been postponed until the ground floor is back in use; more details hopefully in the next issue.

The Brookdale garden is taking on a distinctly autumnal hue.  With the coming of autumn we look forward to the trees turning on brilliant displays of reds, yellows, oranges and browns.




Remove summer bedding plants soon enough to plant spring bedding and get it established before severe weather begins.  Do not manure flower borders at this time of year, but give a dressing of 4 oz. per square yard of bone-meal.  Clear fallen leaves from rock plants and lawns. Going into November lift fuchsias, begonias and geraniums, and bring inside.  Dig vacant ground and leave it rough for the frost to break down.  Dress heavy soil with lime. Continue to clear up fallen leaves and cut down herbaceous plants to 18 inches above soil level.




Now is the time to remove plants that are past their best. Empty compost from containers not required during the winter. Pot up tender plants and bring indoors.  Move trees and shrubs in containers to a less exposed position or protect with straw or bracken.  When planting trees and shrubs in containers, choose compact varieties and use containers/tubs with broad bases. One suggestion may be to plant containers with dwarf conifers, heathers and skimmias and under-plant with bulbs. Also this is the time to order bulbs for autumn planting and prepare containers for planting spring bulbs.


Indoor Plants


Soak newly acquired plants in a bucket of water.  Place plants where they will be warm but not subject to direct heat; where they will get plenty of light but be out of draughts. Keep them away from frosty windows at night. Try to avoid drastic fluctuations of temperature.  Reduce watering as we move into November so that soil surface is almost dust-dry, but roots are slightly moist.  Use fertiliser only on plants in flower or growing strongly.


Poinsettias and Christmas Wreaths Orders for Christmas


Due to present circumstances only pre-ordered Christmas Wreaths and Poinsettias will be available at the Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday 17th December. Orders will be taken at the October and November Coffee Mornings. Please order as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Section and Club Appointments


George Beaumont has been appointed to serve as the Gardening Section Vice President for the 2016/2017 year. Our best wishes go to him. Our thanks go to Diane Bowker who retires as VP.


Margaret Longden will continue to be the Gardening Section Chairman. Our thanks go to Margaret for her leadership last year and wish her well going forward.


Congratulations to Maureen Walsh, the Brookdale Club President, for a most eventful and successful tenure during her term of office in most demanding times. It was therefore fitting that Maureen has been asked to remain President of the club for what we hope will be a less stressful year.


Congratulations to Kerry Blake on her appointment as Hon. Chairman of the General Committee. We wish her well.


August and September have been busy months for the gardeners at Brookdale:


Friday 12th August. The visit to Cholmondeley Castle, Malpas was most enjoyable. The gothic castle stands on a high rise above the lake surrounded by sweeping lawns and a variety of mature trees, including Cedars of Lebanon, Oak, and Chestnut. The gardens surrounding the castle provide a lovely mix of colour and height, with interesting walks around the lake. The Temple Water Garden, Rose Garden, and a variety of mixed borders provided wonderful colour.


Saturday 13th August Coffee Morning in the Upper Hall


Our Coffee morning was well attended. The table flower displays were once again very attractive and testament to the skill and dedication of all who contributed. Our President and Head Gardener Maureen gave good gardening advice as ever.  At the July coffee morning Maureen recommended an organic Weedkiller but could not recollect its name.  Too much mirth Maureen advised that the name of the product she had forgot at the last meeting was called “WEEDKILLER”.  Will she ever live this down?  Diane Bowker our VP provided the group with much jollity and mirth and hasn’t her timing improved. Some will say to a semi professional level.  However she did let the cat out of the bag that Brian Bellass has been her script writer throughout the year.  A comedian is only as good as her script writer!!!!  Conversation, tea and coffee flowed in abundance.


Saturday 10th September Coffee Morning and Home Grown Show Main Hall


The Home Grown show [fruit, vegetables, flowers, cakes and preserves] and coffee morning was well attended and the entries in the show were a credit to all who entered. The overall winners were Harvey Dickinson [fruit, vegetables,]; Bryan Lingwood [flowers]; and Harvey Dickinson [cakes and preserves].  The show judges commented on the high quality of the entries. However they made the point that the exhibits must meet the show criteria and that some very good entries failed to achieve a “First Award” because they did not meet the show criteria.


Our Club President Maureen congratulated all the winners for the high standard of entries and provided encouragement to those who did not win this time. The exhibits were open up to the club at the end of the meeting so that they could be admired by all thus rounding off a most pleasant morning.


The Show Competitions are open to all members of the Garden Section and all are encouraged to exhibit whether you are seasoned entrants, new or not yet started; so why not try your hand the next time.  The more people who take part the better. Who knows what talent there is out there waiting to be discovered?

There are times when I do not like this job. “What!” I hear you exclaim, aghast. “Surely that cannot be!” Yes, gentle reader, it is all too true. And why? Because as I enjoy the balmy air and soft golden sunshine of these late summer days I must write of events which are scheduled for the dark days of winter and even turn my thoughts to C*******s. Can there be a more strident reminder of “time’s winged chariot”? But so it must be.


Our Autumn Tea Afternoon will have passed by the time you read this, so I will report in the next News.


Our Section VPs Evening will be held on Saturday 5th November in the Upper Hall, starting at 7.30pm. We will be entertained by Willie and the Poor Boys, who many of you will remember performed in the Bar recently and gave us a foot-tapping evening of music from the fifties and sixties. There will also be a hot supper to relish. Tickets are £15 each and are on sale now, either from our Chairman, Joan Tate, at Club events or by using the form in this edition of the News. Because we are in the Upper Hall, numbers will be strictly limited, so do buy yours soon.


Our usual Christmas Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 26th November in the Upper Hall at 10.30am, when you will be able to enjoy a relaxing morning of coffee, biscuits and pleasant conversation to build up your strength for the coming festivities. Do join us then!


Also, make a note in your diary that our Winter Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 21st January, again in the Upper Hall at 10.30am. More details in the next News.

The English group is for anyone with an interest in the spoken and written language, and its activities are very varied – come and try it and relish our fascinating and beautiful

Thursday 11th August Bollin Valley Ramble

Leaders Ray and Judy Rodwell


Having ordered our lunches from the Thief’s Neck, Woodford, 13 ramblers set out along Chester Road towards the Deanwater and then entered the fields towards Dean Row, meeting a flock of sheep. In Dean Row, we passed the Montessori Nursery School and Dean Row Chapel with its interesting 1871 three-faced sundial. In Hollies Lane we found the inconspicuous slim-fit footpath to the River Bollin and there enjoyed a coffee break.

Continuing past the three hollow oaks and through a “gloomy swamp, fit for an alligator” we now encountered another larger flock of sheep intent on rushing through our intended gate. After Newton Hall Farm we came out on Mill Lane and crossed into Woodford Lane to Lumb Farm and thence across fields and the River Dean to Old Hall Barn (1660) meeting some inquisitive and excitable bullocks en route, one of which attempted to jump the fence at our approach! Old Hall Lane then brought us back to a very enjoyable lunch at the Davenport Arms.


Thursday 8th September 2016 – Ramble – From Butley Town to Bollington

The day dawned bright but by the time 15 intrepid walkers had assembled at Brookdale, the first few drops of rain were already falling. Undeterred, we set off for the Butley Ash, whose lunch menus we had already perused. Amazingly, the rain had ceased by then and we enjoyed a pleasant 5½ mile walk through the quaint hamlet of Butley Town and headed for Bollington along some of Cheshire’s lesser used and secret byways – some so secret that at one point we had to cut back the hedge to even see the stile! On our way through Bollington we passed along a road paid for by Public Subscription in 1865 and some interesting Cottages associated with Lowerhouse Mill. Setting off across more fields we arrived back at the “Ash” for a well-deserved Lunch.


Sunday 28th August –  Circular Stroll from High Lane to Windlehurst Hall

Seven strollers set off from High Lane Village Hall car park on a warm sunny day. We walked through the park to the canal and headed towards Marple. We crossed the canal at Bridge 8 and waved to a passing canal boat festooned with birthday banners. We soon reached the Windlehurst Hall housing complex. This replaced the old hall in 1996, which one of the strollers remembered. We paused here to admire the lovely views over the meadows below us. We eventually turned right and walked along a tree-lined path until we reached a  large stone house with a lily pond in front of it. We stopped for a group photo and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to one of the strollers. We passed Lomber Hey farm on our left and made our way back to the car park via Andrew Lane and the canal.

Everyone agreed that it had been a most enjoyable stroll with wonderful views

Lunch at the Dog and Partridge was excellent.


Sunday 25th September 2016 – A Circular Stroll around Brabyns Park

Eight strollers, including a new club member, set off from the car park in Brabyns Park and followed the path along the River Goyt towards Compstall.  It started to rain just after we set off and became quite heavy. The river level was high after the night’s heavy rain so we stopped briefly at the weir to watch the water cascading over it. The rain stopped as we reached the cast iron bridge over the river at the lodge. An information board and a sound recording gave details about the bridge. It was built in 1813 by the owner of Brabyns Hall to give him access to his mill at Compstall and was one of the first cast iron bridges in the North. We carried on along the path by the river, over a footbridge and along the road from the sports pavilion back to the car park.

Lunch at the Hare and Hounds was poor. The service was slow and the meat in some meals tough.


Thursday 25th August.  Long Ramble:  Lamaload Reservoir and Shining Tor.

Leader: Denis Downham.


Seven ramblers set off from Lamaload Reservoir Car Park on a still and cloudy morning. Our walk took us uphill into thick mist and after two steep climbs we arrived at the Shining Tor triangulation pillar, which is the highest point in Cheshire. Pressing on from Shining Tor and descending we then walked along Chest Hollow and eventually reached the Stanley Arms pub. Following the track from the pub we again crossed the A537 and following the way marks we passed the deserted Higher Ballgrave Farm surround by rusting farm machinery.


Our next destination was the Reservoir’s Water Treatment Works where on reaching it we turned right and climbed the grassy bank which led us high above the reservoir and to our cars after a delightful walk but unfortunately with poor weather conditions.


Thursday 22nd September – Long Ramble

Six energetic hikers left the Sett Valley car park and ascended Lantern Pike.

Dropping down into Little Hayfield where Tony Warren first wrote Corrie, we

explored the remains of an old out door swimming pool. Onto the moors for

a picnic then down past 20 trees (there are only 19!) to Hayfield. We saw

the house Arthur Lowe was born in, the shops used in the TV programme “The

Village” and the cricket pitch used in an episode of “Dad’s Army”.  A heron,

buzzards and red grouse entertained us but where was the kingfisher?

Wonderful countryside, weather and, of course, company!

As Jane Booth steps down as our Vice President – thank you Jane – we welcome Jean James to the stage and wish her a happy year.  Theatre also congratulate Maureen Walsh at the beginning of her second term as Club President!  Let’s hope her year is a little less eventful than the last.


Well, the Club is already looking much improved following the flood and we are looking forward to seeing the finishing touches.  There has been much hard work going on, not only visible but behind the scenes, by a relatively small group of members and we’re grateful for their efforts.


Looking ahead to the Autumn months, why not come along to the theatre social event which kicks off the season.  We welcome Chris Jolley who will be treating us to an “Inspirational Music Night” on Saturday 22nd October.  There will be a two course hot supper in the Jubilee Café but, as there will still be no bar available, please remember to bring your own drinks.  The booking form appears again in this newsletter for your convenience.


Theatre will once more share their November coffee morning date with the Social Committee who will be collecting items for the various Christmas Fair stalls.  So come along at the usual time on Saturday 5th November for a free coffee in exchange for your contribution; see the list of stalls elsewhere in this newsletter.


We will also be serving coffee, mince pies and Christmas cake on the occasion of the Christmas Fair on Saturday 3rd December in the Upper Hall.


As you will know by now, as well as postponing Habeas Corpus to next season, we have found it necessary to delay BYT’s production of Oliver!  Instead of the previously advertised dates of 21st to 26th November, this brilliant show will be performed by our young members from Monday 12th to Saturday 17th December, with a Saturday matinee.  We are extremely grateful to those sections who have agreed to change their own bookings to make this possible, in particular Gardening and Dancing.  Some great songs are included in Lionel Bart’s musical version of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist of course, including “As Long As He Needs Me”, “Food Glorious Food”, “Consider Yourself”, “I’d Do Anything” and many more.  The booking form is enclosed so don’t delay!


We would like to thank Barbara and Harvey Dickinson for looking after the coffee and sweets supplies for the coffee mornings and productions. They have decided to step down from this role.   This, of course, now leaves a gap


Ron Khouri will be stepping down as Theatre’s Treasurer at the next AGM.  So there’s plenty of time for someone to learn the ropes before taking over the reins.  How about you?  If you’d like to find out more about the role, why not give Ron a call on 0161 439 2490.




We hope you will all continue to support our BYT show Oliver! following the change of dates due to the refit of the club.  As well as coming to see the show we will need lots of help with front of house, coffees, programmes, and sweets/ice cream selling etc.  We may also need some help with chaperones.  If you can help with chaperoning please contact Tommy Farrell (07759 146381).

On Tuesday 13th September we visited the Oldham Coliseum to see Brassed Off which was about the miners strikes in the 1980s.  Sad but also uplifting.


Our next theatre visit is to the Lowry to see the Alan Ayckbourn play, Relatively Speaking.  The coach will be leaving the club at 6.00pm.


We have now booked for the Halle Christmas Concert at the Bridgewater Hall on Sunday 18th December, leaving the club at 1.30pm.  Tickets will be £33.00

Forty Three years ago in May 1972 some 30 members joined together in the bar Lounge for a snack lunch which had been prepared by the members and Walrus was formed.  Over the years that have followed much has happened in the growth of Brookdale and in consequence of which much has happened in Walrus.  Membership numbers have grown but also have fallen.  More often than not this has been from natural causes because the whole reason for its formation was to provide an interest for those members who had ceased an active business life.


This purpose has been well served and as most of you will know that at our AGM in May of this year it was agreed to see the approval of the General committee to change the title to “The Luncheon Club” making it open to all those of other age groups who are interested as well.


The format of the lunches will remain the same ie meeting up with friendship in the bar from about 1.45 am before enjoying a two course meal in the Main Hall followed by a variety of speakers. (when those parts of the Club have been restored to their original and previous use).  In the meantime we shall be making the best of a bad job by holding our functions in the Upper Hall.


Therefore welcome all to THE LUNCHEON CLUB.  At the time of going to press the costs of the lunches will remain at £10.00 and the membership fee £1.50 all inclusive of 20% VAT.


Our October lunch on Wednesday 19th October will be as mentioned in the Upper Hall and our speaker will be Mr Keith Warrender (a well known writer, rambler and many other things)  the title of his talk will be “From Teggs Nose to Macclesfield”.


Other lunches are mentioned in the diary at the back of this issue do make a note of them in yours.  Why not bring friends along or encourage members of the ramblers to give us a trial.



Saturday 20th August was  our annual  Coffee  Morning.  It was attended by  some  90  members  and proved an enjoyable morning. It gave us the opportunity to get together again during our unusual summer disruption and we were able to keep members informed about our planned activities over the  Autumn  period.


We are unable to hold our Autumn Supper due to the shortage of accommodation.


Our September meeting  was  an AV presentation by Judith and Stephen Coyne.  A much travelled husband and wife team.  This programme was ‘’ In Search of the Komodo Dragon’’.  It covered their visit to Indonesia.  A population of some 240 million with 300 languages. They described the visits to the 8 main islands.  On Java the Borobudur  Buddhist  Temple  was a fascinating  building and made us long to visit it too.

Bali, the holiday island, is the one with the active volcano.


The final island visited was  Komodo. Here we saw the dragon,  9  feet  long and very powerful.  Not to be trifled with.


On Monday 26th September,  a  happy coach load of Travellers set off in the rain for  historic  Shrewsbury.  It was still raining when we arrived  to  unload by the River Severn.  Here, due to the weather conditions, we decided to split forces . Some to explore  the  area of  the city  near to  Victoria Quay and the rest to visit Dobies  Garden Centre on the outskirts.  We  all found a good selection of food for our lunch.   We then reunited at the Victoria Quay and boarded our passenger boat  ‘ Sabrina’  for a 45 minute cruise on the river. This covered the loop between the Welsh Bridge and the English Bridge. A  picturesque  section of the river.  The captain gave us an entertaining  and  knowledgeable  commentary  on the return leg. The  Shrewsbury School , Abbey and Cathedral were amongst  the buildings  we past.  The tea and biscuits were appreciated too.

So, despite the rain, we managed an enjoyable outing.

The sad news is the loss of our good friend and excellent supporter , Rowland Dunston.  We shall miss his kindness and his great sense of humour.


Mrs June Lythgoe is still in hospital,  at this time.  We wish her a speedy  recovery.

This News will be with you in mid October, and I am writing it before my holiday mid September, so please accept my apologies if I have missed anything ‘last minute’

The refurbishment is well under way and we will soon have our Club back, a little different, a brand new look in certain areas, but changes apart , it is still the place where we enjoy our social life and spend time with friends. Long may it continue!


We hope that those of you who journeyed to Arley Hall savoured the Food Festival and that everyone enjoyed VPs evening as we welcome Harvey Dickinson as our new VP later on the same day. On behalf of all our members we wish him a happy and successful year and thank Sue Khouri for her fantastic contribution to the Section during her year as VP. Our special thanks also, to President Maureen and to Brenda who have supported us at every function and done so much throughout the Club during this happy,  yet traumatic year.


Our programme over the next few months offers more food and a little wine!

On Friday 14th October  for the price of just £5 (pay at the door) is our Sausage Experience – a chance to watch this popular food being made, try your hand at sausage making and taste the results! Delicious!


There’s a change to our November get together. On Friday 11th November, by popular request we will be holding a Foodie Movie Night. This is a chance to see an excellent film called The Hundred Foot Walk, starring Helen Mirren, whilst enjoying themed food to fit the bill.


Due to the refurbishment, the BYT production of Oliver will now be from 12 – 17th December. This means that the plans for our meeting on Friday 9th December have been postponed.  We will make it up to you by having a New Year special as Waitrose entertain us.  More details in the next edition!


At the time of writing the identity of our new President is not yet known. Whoever he or she may be we wish them a wonderful and successful year in office.
