What a busy couple of months it has been.
We were invited to the Theatre coffee morning on Saturday 7th June, followed by the 250 Club draw in the bar. The next day was Theatre BBQ. It began in the heat of the day. Fantastic food cooked to perfection by a very experienced crew. The weather remained great for the food but once we had finished, the rain came along. A few of us finished by ‘resting’ in the bar. A very good finish to the Theatre season.
We joined the Ramblers for a walk around Marple and Mellor on Thursday.
On Friday it was the Wine and Food VP’s evening singing along to some very old fashioned songs with the Dinkie Doos.
The following day was Gardeners coffee morning where I helped to Judge the roses in the Rose Show.
On Monday we attended the funeral of Glenda Naylor, a long standing member of both Travel and Walrus.
Sunday 15th Juneit was the start of my Charity fortnight. It began with a Charity concert by Andante, helped along by Whinge and Racket. They performed to a full house including some visitors from Stockport Samaritans. A wonderful afternoon.
On Tuesday 17th June, the Bowling section held their Charity Bowling afternoon. A very pleasant occasion with lots of good humour and magnificent sunshine.
The following day we were invited to Afternoon Tea by the Walrus VP Jean Lingwood. The scones cream and jam were delicious. That evening, having attended 16 Brookdale AGMs, we had been invited, by the Samaritans, to attend their AGM in Heaton Moor. A very pleasant experience where the Mayor and Mayoress were present. It made quite a busy day.
Thursday evening 19th June was the Charity Whist Drive. As Roy was in hospital, I was invited along earlier than usual and then asked if I would like to play. I had various partners but I don’t think that they were too impressed!
Saturday was the Charity Fair and I would like to thank everybody who helped in the setting up, the donating of raffle prizes and gifts for the various stalls and the collecting of donations from local shops. I would also like to thank everyone who worked on the stalls and served coffee etc. The representatives from Samaritans were most impressed by the attitude of everybody they met from the Club.
The Charity Lunch, organised by Niel and Jo Lingwood was a magnificent occasion. It was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress, 2 members of Stockport Samaritans and many members of Brookdale Club. I would like to thank all the members who were involved in the preparation and cooking and all the helpers who did such a good job waiting on at the tables. It could not have been easy in such a crowded room. It was altogether a memorable day.
Next afternoon the Dancing section held their first ever Charity Tea Dance. which was very well attended. It was a most enjoyable afternoon. This was followed in the evening by Harvey and Barbara’s Charity Quiz with some very devious questions!
The final section Charity event was a Bridge Drive on Wednesday. What a large and friendly group they are. On Friday evening we attended a very interesting talk on “The High Pyrenees” with the Travel Section.
The finale, on Saturday 18thJunewas a sell out concert by ‘Sisters in Song’ A tremendous duo who sang a variety of songs to suit all tastes. The atmosphere in the hall was electric. It was particularly enjoyed by Brian Wood!
Joan and I would like to thank everybody who supported all the Section Charity events.
Now that the Charity events are over, back to normality. On Sunday 6thJuly we were taken by the Caracamp VP, Joyce Doodson and her husband Peter, to Garstang for our first Caracamp rally. The weather was good and we enjoyed the atmosphere and the BBQ. Cooked by Harvey and Barbara Dickinson. We were made very welcome by all the caracampers.
On Thursday we took part in a ramble around Sale Water Park and then joined the Rambling group for their annual meal in the Boathouse Restaurant overlooking the lake. A very enjoyable day.
The following week we attended the final meeting of the Digital Photography group. It was felt by the committee that over the past 12 years it had served its purpose of educating its members into the new world of digital photography. Many members now felt more confident in using the new camera technology and they no longer needed support. The photographic world has now moved on, with more people now taking photos on their mobile phones and tablets and emailing the results to their friends and family.
On Saturday 19th July, I missed the Flower Show at Gardeners Coffee Morning because of family commitments, but I was well represented by the Dancing VP Pauline Ward.
Our final event this month was a trip, organised by the Walrus Section, to Dunham Massey where we visited the gardens and the exhibitions in the rooms that were converted into the Stamford Military Hospital in the First World war. An excellent day out with beautiful weather.
Best wishes to all our members who have been unwell or have had hospital treatment recently. We hope that you are back at Brookdale again soon.
As this is my last letter before handing over the Chain of Office to my successor, I would like to thank everyone for making Joan and I so welcome at all the functions we have attended and making our year so enjoyable.

Our “Advertising” Whist board was stolen from the notice board at the front of the club, the evening before the July Whist drive, but we still managed eight and a half tables of players.
We do not yet know if we will be able to obtain a replacement board. The stolen one was made for us by Mr Geoff Burgess, so will players please note the dates of the next Open Whist Drives: Thursday 21st August, Thursday 16th October, Thursday 20th November and Thursday 18th December. We meet in the Upper hall, and play commences at 7.30 pm, admission is £2.00 per person. No partner is needed, tea and biscuits are served in the interval, and we also have a raffle. Why not come and join us?
This raises funds for the Brookdale, and is also a way in which members can win a cheque. Application forms for the year 2014/2015 were in the last “News” and more are available at the Club. You may purchase as many “shares” as you wish, each one costs £12.00 and give you one number which is entered into the next 12 monthly draws. The draws are held in the bar at 11.45 am on the first Saturday each month, normally drawn by the President. If the winner of the first of the three monthly prizes is present, a bottle of wine is also won.

As I write the sun is out and it is roasting hot- what a lovely summer we are enjoying, and I hope you are all well and making the most of it. Things are fairly quiet at present but I am sure they will all hot up again soon.
We all enjoyed the Charity quiz with Barbara and Harvey Dickinson in charge and we start the season with Brian Wood doing the next quiz. As you know we will be bringing nibbles for our own tables this time and we shall see how it works out.
The September quiz will be taken by Jean Tudge and I shall be contacting others to see whether they will be available for the later quizzes.
Brian Lingwood’s quiz went well as did Iain Dickinson’s, so thank you to both of you for those.
The bar has been closed on two nights in August but will re-open as usual in September so I hope all you stewards will be back in strength.
We shall all be finding out who our next President will be soon- not long now! But thank you to Ron our present President for his hard work during the year and I hope he has enjoyed it.

VPs’ Evening: Saturday, 20th September 2014. Aren’t the weeks passing quickly! This will be here very soon. I am sure it will be a very entertaining evening knowing what we have planned, so don’t miss out on the fun. Tickets are still available from your new VPs although there is often a shortage nearer the time. You can be sure our Committee will be working hard towards your enjoyment of this special traditional evening. The Club AGM takes place two days before this (Thursday 18th September) so that’s two important dates for you.
Table-top Sale: Sunday 28th September 2014 at 9.15am. Gerry and Barbara Needham will be organising this sale. There will be the usual bacon butties and coffee etc available to sustain you through the morning. Christmas Fair Collection: Saturday, 8th November 2014. This is the morning to bring any contributions towards our annual fair. There will be coffee and biscuits available during the morning.
New Year’s Eve: 31st December. Tickets will be on sale from September so watch this space. Arrangements are already in hand to entertain you and we last year’s very good DJ booked. Brookdale New Year Eve is always an enjoyable occasion and this one will be too.
Sections News (in alphabetical order)
Another year gone by and we’re ready for the Summer break again. The choir will meet for their usual social evening on Wednesday30th July when various members display their talents to entertain us. Doreen Shannon will be playing keyboard with the alto section accompanying her for a short song and Anne Morley will be running a competition for us to guess which member belongs to which photo. Each photo will be of a child taken many years ago! Other performances will add to the enjoyment and everyone will bring food, thanks to Elaine Stafford (VP) and Maria Nolan for organising it so that there is a good variety of food on the night. Thanks also to Melvyn Owen for again playing piano to accompany the musical contributions to the evening and to Ron Heywood for organising the programme and being MC for the night. Let’s hope it goes really well. Our lovely patient choir master Alan Streak will for once be in the audience and we all thank him for another year of his hard work and wonderful arrangements of popular songs.
The concert went really well on Sunday afternoon, 15th June. We raised £700 for the President’s Charity and a lovely afternoon was enjoyed by all. Whinge and Racket entertained us on keyboard and piano in between songs from past concerts and a few new numbers. Refreshments served by the choir members were organised by Sheilah Mullen and Audrey Brukshaw. Carol Streak organised the raffle which produced £100 for the winning ticket which Pam Griffiths (choir member) had but only realised when no one else admitted to having it and we spent some time waiting for her to find it in her handbag. Well worth the wait for her!!
Thank you for all your support at the concert, as usual we are dependent on you for it to be a success.
We thank Elaine Stafford for all her hard work as VP this year. She managed to get us in to a new uniform for the concerts (bright pink sashes for the ladies and matching bow ties for the men both worn over black attire). She also organised a meal for the choir on Saturday 19th July at the Alma Lodge, Stockport. There were mixed reviews about the food but a very nice venue and the staff excellent and in the main we all enjoyed it. Of course she had many other duties along the way all carried out with great sincerity and cheerfulness. Thank you Elaine.
Brian Wood will be taking over as VP and he is busy now getting support for VP’s evening on Saturday 20th September. We wish him lots of luck for his year in office and hopefully he will really enjoy all his responsibilities. Welcome Brian.
We resume rehearsals on Wednesday 3rd September when we hope all our members will have had a good summer holiday. Our thoughts will be with Brian Webster who has been really ill just recently and we wish him a good recovery.
Again we welcome new members to join us on Wednesday evenings for an enjoyable evening singing. Please come along.

Our watercolour challenge took place in Bramhall Park on Tuesday 22nd July and Wednesday 23rd July, ten members enjoyed the lovely sunny weather and six more on the Wednesday.
We have a workshop in watercolour by Paul Brotherton booked for Tuesday 30th September. Tickets will be available when we retune on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday10th September.
We will be holding our coffee morning on Saturday 18th October this year featuring once again Joe Sambrook with his tales of life in Salford. We have the Brookdale 2015 Calendar of original art works for sale and also our Christmas cards so bring your purse with you.
Congratulations go to the Gardening section for the beautiful baskets and herbaceous border which rivals the ones seen at Newby Hall.

Charity Day bowling, was on Tuesday 17th June. The weather was cloudy but remained dry. There was a very good attendance and the cash raised from this and the raffle amounting to £92.00 was donated to the President’s charity. Many thanks to those that gave prizes for the raffle. Play ended with bowlers paying a fee of 50p attempting to get their wood nearest to a Jack placed in the centre of the green. The nearest wood was bowled by Christine Smith, a recent member of the Section who was awarded a bottle of wine. The game of “Play your cards right” on Charity Day, Saturday 21st June and organised by Roger Grimes and Jean Lach raised £32.50. This and the £18.00 collected the previous Tuesday from “Jack in the middle” was also donated to the charity.
Captains’ Day, Wednesday 25th June. The weather again was cloudy but with an occasional burst of sunshine. Out thanks to Roger Grimes for organising this event, preparation of score cards etc.
The next event on our programme is All Prize Day on Wednesday 14th August. To remind members of the rules, every bowler donates a prize valued at not less that £2.50, this donation may also be £2.50 in cash. At the end of the game the player with the highest score has first choice of the prizes, second highest has next choice and so on, the lowest score takes what is left. This year the game will be 3-2-1 explanation of the rules as follows:
The teams consist of 3 players and the order of play is decided before play begins, each player takes their turn bowling the Jack. It does not matter who starts who plays second etc. but this order of play must be retained for the entire game, irrespective of who wins the End. Scoring is 3 points for the wood nearest the Jack, 2 points for the next nearest and 1 point for the third nearest. It is possible though unlikely for a player to score 5 point at each End.
Cards will be issued to record your individual score and presented to the Recorder at the end of the game.

The site contains up to date news and information about the Club and the Section, and has all the recent results and analysis of all our duplicate Bridge sessions. It has been a time of moderate weather and rude health; I’ve no one on the sick list!!!. I hope I’m not writing too soon.

This is proving to be an ideal summer for those who enjoy the Great Outdoors, and the first Carabreak of the season was a great success. There were five units of camper / caravans at The Bridge House Marina, Garstang. The pub for the traditional Saturday evening meal out was within walking distance (always a plus!) and as an added bonus the meals were “buy one get one free”.
One of the group enjoyed fishing in the canal but I don’t think he supplied the food for the Sunday BBQ! For that event everyone was delighted to welcome VP Joyce Doodson with Peter and President Ron Clare with Joan. Thanks go to Harvey and Barbara Dickinson for organising an excellent weekend with good weather.
There are two more Carabreak weekends to come – one as we go to press and one at the beginning of September - but then it’s time for coffee mornings to begin again. Our first one will be on Saturday 20th September. There will be a Carachat on Monday 13th October at 8.00pm and an Open Evening on Friday 14th November . Please keep a watch on the notice board for details of these autumn events.
John and Sheilah Mullen and John Birch-Jones are still very much in our thoughts as they are not enjoying the best of health at present.

Our contribution to The Presidents Charity was our first ever Afternoon Tea Dance. We were delighted to welcome eighty three members guests and visitors. Dennis Hill put together a varied programme of dances for everyone. Our ‘Chairman’, Lucy Bryan with the committee and other members organised the dainty refreshments, the cream scones were very popular. We asked the dancers if they would like to have another Tea-Dance. The answer was a resounding ‘Yes’ So watch this space!!!
A dance called the Caribbean Samba is to be revised from September.
One or two members have not been very well recently, so we send our love and thoughts to them.

The Last Hurrah
We ran an interesting photo-shoot day out at Styal instead of a regular meeting and several members enjoyed the day – ending with Lunch at the Ship Inn – even though the sun did not shine as brightly as we would have liked. In July members of the Committee presented the meeting with a pot-pouri of tips, tricks and ideas to whet the appetite, a quick overview of some of the more useful accessories you might add to your camera to increase its flexibility and a couple of fascinating gadgets (or “gizmos”). The first being a camera, cam-corder, multimedia display and mini-projector all in one package of about the same size as a mobile phone – price tag less than £100. Then Laurie Bell enthralled us with pictures taken with his microscope camera that enlarged everyday things like grains of sand, seeds and even coins, to show them in a completely new light.
As this was the final meeting of the Section we hope those who attended were able to take away with them something to continue their interest. There was the usual photo-competition – appropriately the theme was “The Last Hurrah” – and the results of this are now on display. Finally, we had a bit of a party.
Well, it’s “Goodbye, Farewell and thanks for the support members have shown over the past decade”, especially the handful of members who were in at the start of the venture.
For those of you who don’t know, the Section has now closed because we are no longer covering our costs. This isn’t a failure – on the contrary we have so thoroughly fulfilled the objectives set out when the Section was started that we are no longer needed.
In brief, when Brookdale members first started buying digital cameras, over 10 years ago, they were so perplexed by (and even afraid of) their new cameras with the plethora of different scene mode settings and a bewildering array of complex menus to negotiate their way through, that many put the camera away in a drawer and shouted for help. In response, John Wagstaff had the idea of setting up a self-help group to enable members to become sufficiently confident to use their cameras unaided. More than 60 people attended the inaugural meeting! Most members stayed with us for 2-3 years, until they felt able to use their cameras to take the sort of photographs they wanted, when they moved on. A steady succession of members passed through the Section, in their turn leaving once they were happy. Those members who joined early on found that when they bought a more up-to-date camera they could use it properly straight away so they didn’t need to come again.
Probably, another technology advance has been the final straw. Just take a look around at the devices that many people are now using to take their snaps – they aren’t cameras but Tablets and Smart-phones which are even easier to use and which have the added convenience that you can use them to give a slide show and easily e-mail snaps to family, friends and any other contact, without having to bother about printing them.
Now, so few members need our help that we are unable to continue. We had dreamed that the group might turn into a more advanced Photography Section, but there don’t seem to be enough enthusiasts for us to remain viable, so we ceased our activities on 15th July – while our bank account was still in the black. It has been a very enjoyable venture and the Committee are sad to see it come to an end, but are grateful for the support so many have shown over the years
Finally, thanks to all Club members who submitted entries for the President’s Charity Cup and helped swell the proceeds. These were left on display in the entrance hall for over three weeks and attracted much comment and admiration. We can all be proud of the quality of the pictures we are taking now we have more experience.
We will be setting up an on-line Forum to enable photographers to stay in touch – details will appear in a later Brookdale News.

The Brookdale garden has looked a picture throughout the seasons and is a testament to the hard work of Maureen Walsh and Brenda Jones. The phlox in the garden are looking beautiful and smell lovely. The cyclamen are coming along well having flowered early and the Echinacea are a blaze of varied colour. The begonias [Pink Destiny] recently planted by the brook are in full display. The hanging baskets provide a colourful welcome to all that visit the club.

The Rose show and coffee morning was well attended and the roses entered in the show were a credit to all who entered. Our Head Gardener and Chairperson Maureen congratulated all the winners for the high standard of entries and provided encouragement to those who did not win this time.
19th July Coffee Morning and Flower Show in the Main Hall
This too was most enjoyable and the quality of the exhibits was good.
14th July Visit to Newby Hall and Gardens
Newby Hall is a beautifully restored 17th century Robert Adam house, designed under the guidance of Sir Christopher Wren with some of Britain’s finest Robert Adam interiors. Newby Hall is home to a wonderful collection of Chippendale furniture, Gobelins tapestries and classical statuary.
Newby’s magnificent double herbaceous borders flanked by yew hedges with a broad grass walk running down the middle towards the River Ure form the main axis of the garden; off this central walk are formal compartmented gardens such as the beautiful and tranquil Sylvia’s Garden, a species Rose Garden, Water Garden, Rock garden and an enchanting woodland walk. Newby is truly “A Garden for All Season” making it a most enjoyable day.

Saturday 13th September Coffee Morning and Home Grown Show Main Hall
The Home Grown show [fruit, vegetables, flowers, cakes and preserves] is open to all members of the Garden Section and all are encouraged to exhibit whether you are seasoned entrants, new or not yet started.
Exhibiting at a show is not very difficult, it is usually common sense and gardeners have plenty of that. Have a go.
Some guidance which may help:
Cut Flowers. Always pick your best and most even blooms, as close as possible to the show date. Ensure they are free from leaf and petal damage. Arrange them tidily in the correct size and type of container. Use plenty of water to keep them fresh.
Vegetables and fruit. Use good quality produce, which has been washed and clean but not polished. Go for uniformity rather than size and make sure you exhibit the correct quantityfor each class.

Martin will be speaking about Perennials at our Friday evening meeting. Martin is an expert in his field and this is a talk not to be missed by those who just love perennials or who are thinking of planting out a perennial border.

The Royal Horticultural Society Banksian Medal will be presented to the overall Gardening Section Show Competition Winne for the year 2014-2015.

It must be that H.G.Wells was thinking of Linguist’s committee meetings when he wrote at the beginning of “The War of the Worlds” about “great intelligences….intellects vast and cool….slowly and surely drawing their plans”. The planning for the 2014-15 season has now reached an advanced stage and I am able to tell you the result.
As in earlier years, we begin with our Autumn Tea Afternoon on Wednesday 1st October in the Upper Hall at 2.30pm, when Janet Bradshaw will beguile us with a talk on “Sweet Memories”, a journey through the many sweets, cakes biscuits, and other delights which have tempted us through the years. With our appetites thus sharpened, we will enjoy a Cheshire Cream Tea of scones, jam and cream. The cost will be £3.50, payable on the door. Although there is no need to book in advance, if you are coming please add your name to the list on the Notice Board to help us with catering.
Our next event will be the Linguist’s Vice President’s Evening on Saturday 18th October in the Main Hall at 7.30pm (although we ask you be in your seats by 7.20pm). This will be “A Night of Eastern Promise”, when “Fatma” will give us an illustrated talk about the significance of Belly Dancing in Islamic and Christian culture. Afterwards, we will enjoy a light Buffet Supper. This promises to be an interesting and unusual evening, so do join us. Tickets are £12.50 each, and booking forms are available in this edition of the “News” and by the Notice Board – book early as numbers will be limited.
Through the summer, the French Group are again playing Boule in the Club car park on Sunday mornings at 11.00am and Monday evenings at 7.30pm so do come along and join in for truly continental activity.
Now – it is again time for me to tell you that we will be publishing the usual annual edition of “Clipboard” for the Christmas Fair this year. For new members, this is an annual digest of the best articles, stories or poems written by Linguist members during the year. So, during the summer, please open your mind to the literary muse and write something for us. You have plenty of time – the closing date for copy is, as usual, Friday 31st October. Please either type or write your piece and leave it in the Linguist’s box at the Club, or e-mail it to [email protected].
Notwithstanding H.G.Wells, we do not yet have a Martian language group, but if you would like to improve your skills in one of the languages we do cover, why not join the relevant group. They require a reasonable knowledge of the language concerned, and most have some expert speakers. The English group is for anyone with an interest in the spoken and written language, and its activities are very varied – come and try it, and relish our varied and beautiful language! Ramble 12th June 2014
Eighteen happy Ramblers set out from the Brookdale Car Park on Thursday12th June on a bright warm sunny day heading for the Devonshire Arms in Mellor. We set out from the pub car park up Gibb Lane to Tarden and then through the Mellor and Townscliffe Golf Course until we got to a steep uphill section at The Banks at the top of which was a good view back across the golf course to Mellor Church. Here we took the opportunity to recover our breath and encouraged a couple of golfers attempting to play their tee shots – they were most appreciative!! We continued on upwards arriving at the wooden cross around 320 metres above sea level and some 400 ft above our starting point. Some great views from here, over Manchester to Winter Hill, westwards to Stockport, Alderley Edge, the power station at Fiddlers Ferry, and the hill ridge at Frodsham.
A short further rise took us onto Black Lane, now with more splendid views to the east towards Kinder and Glossop and we were now on the downward slope, which continued on Primrose Lane to the farm buildings at Birchenough. Here the path led into a field with (Oh horrors!) a herd of frisky young bullocks there to greet us. Some of the ladies were not too comfortable at this point, but undeterred, one of our gentlemen climbed the stile and proceeded to ‘control’ the animals! Nevertheless, some still felt unable to cope and found a way into an adjacent field and rejoined us at a gateway lower down. Unfortunately, the inquisitive beasts had followed the party and now wished to enter said field! This situation was resolved and we continued down across another field, which had been a foot deep in mud when we reconnoitred the route in January. Fortunately, today the going was merely soft, but oh no, more cattle! These however were more mature and quite docile, we passed without incident and thence to the road at Moorend, and finally downhill for a short distance to our starting point and lunch. The fish and chips with mushy peas or homemade chicken and ham pie followed by fresh fruit crumble with cream and custard, tea/coffee all went down very well and the service and hospitality provided were excellent. Lindow Common and Lindow Moss. Sunday 22nd June 2014
Six strollers left the Boddington Arms’ car park near Lindow Common on a lovely warm and sunny day. We walked a short distance up Altrincham Road before turning left onto Greaves Road. Greaves Road is more of a track than a road and made for pleasant walking. We walked along Greaves Road passing through woods and fields until we reached Lindow Moss. This was a landfill until 2000 but has been landscaped and turned into Newgate Nature Reserve. The transformation in such a short time has been remarkable. We headed off through the Reserve to Newgate and then along Newgate to Rossmere. The view across the mere was splendid and we spent some time admiring it. The mere is a fishing reserve and is fenced off to the public though it is possible to walk around the perimeter fence. A local man living nearby told us that he played in the mere when it was a sandpit.
In 1961, the wife of a man who lived at the mere end of Newgate went missing. 1983 peat cutters found a woman’s head in the nearby peat bog. When the news came out the woman’s husband confessed to murdering her, dismembering her body and burying it in the peat bog at the back of their house. After he confessed, the head was dated to be around 1600 years’ old. His wife’s body was never found. On the way back along Newgate, we passed a field with a white horse in it. On the recce, Tony and I spoke to the lady who was feeding it. She said someone had left it in the field, in good health but very thin. She was looking after it and it was now in good shape. She had found a home for it.
We eventually arrived at Lindow Common and after walking around Black Lake returned to the pub car park after a most enjoyable stroll. Four of us stayed for an excellent lunch at the pub.Leaders: Alan Barker and Tony Cummings
July Ramblers and Strollers
A lot of interest was shown for the “Ramblers Annual Luncheon” attracting new members to join in our monthly walks.
Twenty ramblers walked around the outer perimeter of Sale Water Park in very hot sunshine, the route was very pleasant and tree lined in parts providing a welcome shade. This year we did the walk from the opposite direction crossing the River Mersey at Jacksons Boat and following the footpaths taking us in the direction of Ivy Green Lane Chorlton. We headed back taking a short break alongside the river, before returning to Sale Water Park. This year we did the walk in two hours giving us plenty of time to meet up with the Brookdale Strollers who had an eventful experience when stepping across the stones in the Lake. All was well with the support of our team leader Mrs Sheila Salden and Mr Alan Barker. The two-course luncheon was enjoyed by thirty-eight hungry Ramblers and Strollers at the Boathouse Restaurant.

Stage and Props
This is a group of people who, as the name suggests, take on the various backstage roles, including sourcing and organising props for our plays and shows. At present we have no-one to lead or co-ordinate this group. Could you help?
Two other areas which are ‘short staffed’ are lights and sound, where the stalwarts would like to share their skills and spread the workload.
There will be a meeting at which we discuss requirements and allocate backstage jobs – experience not always necessary and help always given – on Thursday 11th September at 7.45pm in the Lesser Hall.
As you know, the first play of the new season Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders will be on stage Wednesday 8th to Saturday 11th October 2014. They’re dropping like flies in this funny murder mystery, but will you guess who dun it? Hurry and get your tickets, booking form enclosed.
The Theatre Social is on Saturday 1st November and lots of exciting ideas and suggestions are being considered to make it a fantastic evening. Make sure the date is firmly in your diary. Details and booking form will be in the next newsletter but keep an eye on the notice board or your inbox to find out in advance what fun is in store!

Since the last Brookdale News we have visited the Oldham Coliseum to see ‘An August Bank Holiday Lark’ which I think was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Coliseum Theatre dates back 128 years making it one of the oldest theatres still in operation in Britain and it has recently undergone a £2m facelift and renovation.
Our next visit is to Liverpool on Wednesday 3rd September. We have booked to see the National Theatre’s award-winning comedy ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’, as it embarks on its biggest-ever tour of the UK and Ireland. Now seen by over 1 million people worldwide, this internationally acclaimed smash-hit is a glorious celebration of British comedy – a unique, laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners. Directed by Nick Hytner and written by Richard Bean and based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, with songs by Grant Olding.
We shall be leaving The Brookdale at 9.30am to arrive in time for morning coffee. Lunch at the Adelphi Hotel has been booked before seeing the matinee performance at the nearby Liverpool Empire.
Coach, 3 course lunch with coffee, stall seats, and driver’s gratuity are all included in the price of £31. All the places have now been taken, but please add your name to the waiting list if you are interested as often places become available due to last minute cancellations.
Our final visit for 2014 is to the Bridgewater Hall for the Halle Carol Concert. It is booked for Sunday 21st December at 3pm and the cost will be £31 per person. After we return from Liverpool, the details of this trip and the form for you to sign if you wish to join us, will be on the notice board.

I promised to report on our June and July events, so here we go.
We joined “Snowdrop”, the Mersey Explorer ferry, at the boarding point in Liverpool the weather was good but as usual on the water there was a strong breeze. We sailed towards the Mersey Bar and at Seaforth we crossed the river and sailed back to Birkenhead before crossing back to the Liverpool side where we rejoined our coach to go to Albert dock for lunch and retail therapy.
On Saturday 21st June we manned our Charity day stall and I must thank all the donors of our lavender, white, and green gifts for providing us with so many gifts to sell. We raised a very good sum for the charity
Gordon Gadsby’s presentation on Friday 27th June , “The High Pyrenees” was very good. In fact, I was quite exhausted after watching his party walk and climb in the mountains.
Our last indoor event of the season was our annual coffee morning which was well attended.
Now, I must point out that if you have forgotten to complete your membership application for 2014/2015, and made sure that Trevor Shannon has it, together with your £2.00 you will miss the future outings we are planning and also the indoor meetings.
John Best has already arranged our speakers for September 2014 to June 2015 and you can collect a list of these at our Friday 19th September meeting. Please see the travel notice board for details for our trip to Leek and Rudyard lake on Wednesday 10th September. On Friday 17th October we have our Autumn supper – steak and ale pie with potatoes, carrots and peas, followed by lemon sponge and custard – cost £13.00 per person.

Once more unto the breach dear friends, or words to that effect. The Summer Holidays are upon us, the children have all broken up, and as one of my Welsh contacts said to me recently ‘Once the Children break up, the weather will change, mark you!’ He was right for we have had some wonderful weather in recent weeks and before that. In consequence we cannot grumble this year. Some will, of course, and say ‘but its been too hot’. Which proves the point that you can never please everybody. So we had our very successful Afternoon Tea in June when our Vice President had the pleasure of the company of all her sibling V.Ps.. The food provided on this occasion by Blenheim Caterers (now JSM Catering) was very good and the entertainment provided by our President Ron Clare showing his montage of pictures covering a lot of the Club’s history was fascinating to see. Many thanks Ron for all the effort that must have been needed to put it all together.
This year we had an outing which was reasonably supported on Wednesday 23rd July and was a visit to Dunham Massey and the World War One Exhibition which is being held there until October of next year. For any of those who have not yet seen the Exhibition it is well worth a visit. We also enjoyed a very hot day as well as good food in the stables restaurant..
So we now approach our season 2014/2015 when our first Lunch will be on Wednesday 17th September when we shall be using a new caterer for the first time. Of equal interest at the beginning of yet another season will be our speaker Keith Birkett whose title is ‘Roberts Ambassador’ with a film and talk about the history etc of Roberts Bakery. Word has it that a small take home package will be handed out. If you enjoy this talk a trip to the Bakery can also be arranged!!!.
Other ideas are well under way for future dates which will be announced in due course..
Our September Lunch is the day before the Club AGM which means that this will be the last visit of our current President and Joan Clare as well as our own Vice President in that office, she does of course continue as our Secretary for the next season. Once again our thanks to all of them and our best wishes to Jean’s successor, Arthur Watson who will take up his office at the AGM making his first Luncheon in October.

WINE AND FOOD
Well,so far we’ve had a beautiful summer (it’s Tuesday30th July as I’m writing this). The gardens are in full bloom and eating and drinking outside has become almost the norm. Here’s hoping the weather will stay sunny over the coming weeks.
Before we launch into our new season of events, I must mention our VP Carol’s special evening which was held in June. We welcomed a full complement of VPs and their escorts along with around sixty members and friends to a splendidly decorated hall, depicting the era of the Great War. We had asked members to bring memorabilia from family members who had fought for their country and we were overwhelmed by the amazing items which adorned the table. Thank you to everyone who brought their precious items. The excellent supper was provided by a new caterer, Dave from Simply Sandwiches. The entertainment, specially chosen by Carol, was by the Dinky Doos, who sang a variety of songs accompanying themselves on ukuleles.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the evening a memorable one. You all know who you are.
Now on to the future….
There are, at this time, a few tickets left for the day trip to Nantwich Food Festival on Friday 5th September. Tickets from Roger Salt (439 0371). The coach will leave Brookdale at 10.30am prompt, returning around 5.30pm. Should be a good day out!
On Friday 10th October we are holding a ‘Foodie Movie ‘night. It may be a hamburger or a hot dog or even popcorn, who knows, but rest assured it will be a fun evening, with a fun movie too.
Our annual joint meeting with Caracamp this year is on Friday 14th November. As many of you will know this is popular event, and details will appear on both noticeboards in due course.
The Wine and Food Christmas Celebration will see the festive season off to a good start on the Friday12th December. The committee are working on the details already!
The annual VP Evening, where we will cheer on John Swait as he receives his badge of office along with all the other VPs elect, is on Saturday 20th September, and as you know, tickets are always limited due to the popularity of the evening. There is a new format this year, which sounds excellent, so do come along and support our section. Any remaining tickets can be obtained from John at £12 each.
