Linguists

[google-translator]

The Linguists are composed of the five groups detailed below:-

Welsh Group

The Welsh group is a small, friendly section. It meets fortnightly to further its knowledge of Wales and the Welsh language. Times are arranged to suit members so please phone the contact for further details.

English Group

The English Group meets in the Lesser Hall on the third Thursday of the month at 8:00 pm.
A topic or theme is chosen by a group member. Most members bring something relevant to the evening’s topic (e.g. poem, passage from a book, newspaper article or a piece of personal writing) If someone wishes he/she can simply listen to the other contributors and join in any ensuing discussions.
Where an activity is chosen then the member concerned leads the group. Recent topics and activities have included Secrets, Life’s minor irritations, Thrift, The Brookdale Club, Word Games and a Book Review Night.
The aim is to explore the use and variety of our own language in an informal atmosphere.

Contact Jean Harrington – 0161 456 8761 for details of our next meeting or look at our noticeboard.

French Group

The French group meets each week on Monday evenings at 8:00 pm in group members’ own homes.
The aim is to reinforce and improve the French knowledge of the group in a supportive environment.
There are some good French speakers in the group, so a good knowledge of basic French would be helpful.

German Group

The German group meets on Tuesday afternoons usually fortnightly in members homes and uses the afternoon to practise its language skills using discussions, writing, or games.
German scrabble is a favourite of this friendly group.

Spanish Group

The Spanish group meet weekly on a Thursday evening in the members’ own homes. The group has a good level of Spanish and benefits from having several expert speakers. All members practise and improve their language skills in a friendly way.

————————–

All Groups include people who are fluent in the language as a result of study, work or having lived part of their life in the country concerned.
People’s levels are all different but we try to cater for all-comers who would like to improve their language skills.
Do get in touch.

If you are interested in a language that is not catered for at the present time (e.g. Italian ) there is always the possibilty of adding a new group if there is enough interest.

Events:

The Linguists’ Section is managed by a dedicated and enthusiastic Committee who arrange a number of Social Events for all Club Members during the year.

These range from coffee mornings and tea afternoons to talks, slideshows, dinners and entertainment.  Sometimes the entertainment is provided by the Linguists themselves.

Please read The Brookdale News and the notice board for details of our future events.

The Section also supports Annual Club Events such as the Christmas Fair and the President’s Charity Day.

Club Members who are interested in Linguist Activities, but are not members of a language group, are welcome to join the Section as Social Members.
